Introducing Vicky & Ads

When Vicky contacted me about selling her soy wax vintage teacup candles in our eco chic wedding boutique, she told me of her plans for her own charitable dream wedding this year. Happily she's agreed to fill us in and keep us posted on the run up to her very stylish green wedding day.

vicky_n_ads.jpgNames: Vicky & Ads

Wedding date: 15th August 2009 (not long!)

Wedding venue and location: Treowen in Monmouthshire. A big old Jacobean manor house that can be hired for days or weeks at a time. We’ve hired it for 4 days so we can make a weekend of it as my Birthday is the following day. The house can accommodate 35 people and a sizeable group are camping in the grounds. The ceremony and reception are all taking place there and we’re responsible for organising everything from the food, booze, entertainments and décor.

How many guests are coming to your wedding and where from? 60 to the reception and a further 60 for the evening. Ads and I live in Bristol and my family live in Wales, however the majority of guests aren’t local. So whilst my family are not traveling far, his family live in Surrey so have a reasonable distance to travel and we’re encouraging them to travel in convoy in minibuses (move over Gavin and Stacey). Family and wedding party are staying in the house, and then the vast majority are camping out in the 300 odd acres.

Do you have a budget and do you think you'll be able to stick to it? 10k is our budget and the venue has taken a very sizeable chunk out of that already…not to mention a band. I’m determined to make the budget work, it’s a challenge but plenty of couples do it on far less, and I’m pleased to say we’re on budget so far. We’ll let you know how we’re getting on regularly. I’m currently putting together our invites……all recycled.

Why is it important to you to throw an eco-wedding? What inspired you? Ads is the most sensitive soul I know, he’s forever out in his garden building insect piles and bumble bee nests…..a green roof for the shed in a garden the size of a walnut. He adores nature and has opened my eyes to a sustainable way of thinking, life is so fragile and we need to take some responsibility. If I’m honest, he’s been a real learning curve for me, there was no question, our wedding had to be green…there’s things we can improve on, I know, but generally we’re having a damn good go and between now and August I think we’ll have it sorted. It’s starting married life together as we mean to go on.

Can you tell us a little about the eco-elements of your wedding? By becoming this absolute control freak (not entirely...I have delegated some things....) I’ve managed to keep a tight reign on nearly everything, from food to even the home made hand poured candles for the evening. All the food for the evening is locally sourced including the lamb roast, the candles are made from soy wax, poured by moi. For the reception we’re having an afternoon tea and a lucky number of guests known for their cake making prowess have been given the honour of making all the cakes for that (all ingredients organic and free range). In fact people volunteered. The crockery we’re using is vintage sourced predominantly from British Heart Foundation and St Peters Hospice (two charities Ads and I felt we wanted to channel some of our money towards, giving a thought to loved ones who wouldn’t be with us). The evening bash is a BYO, so we’ll have plenty of recycling. I’m looking for a vintage dress to wear as the theme is 1920’s…..watch this space as I’m still looking. Not many 6ft ladies around then and I need to lay off all this cake….Panic! I’m also making all the Bridesmaids' jewellery, recycling vintage beads.

Do you think it's easy to be both stylish and green on your wedding day? Absolutely. I’ve done a trial run with the afternoon tea already and it looked amazing, all reclaimed, revamped and up cycled, a look that is incredibly chic, no one would know any better. All my ideas have come from what I perceived to be very stylish weddings in a book I found, however I thought….how can I make that greener…..more affordable. It’s become a real obsession that’s been totally enjoyable and unleashed a creative beast from within.

Have you got any tips, so far, for other brides looking to throw an eco-wedding? Don’t be afraid, just do it. Read up on this website and use the internet for other ideas and go for it. Your wedding should say something about who both of you are, don’t feel you have to have all the things that the wedding magazines plug – strip away to what really matters to you both. There are plenty of venues now that cater for greener weddings, you can either book with one of them or if you’re a glutton for punishment like us…..do it all yourselves. Simple ideas like locally sourced food and home grown flowers are a great start and really great fun to plan. I’ve learnt so much in the past 6 months planning our wedding…….I totally recommend it!
